Formerly, the disinfection of drinking water was a major factor in the containment of epidemics. Today still, it is an essential part of drinking water treatment. However, the disinfectants themselves can react with organic substances occurring naturally in the water (e.g. humic substances), with inorganic ions (e.g. bromide) or with organic micro-pollutants (e.g. pesticides) and form unintended organic and inorganic by-products potentially leading to health risks. The reaction of chlorine with organic material still used in some drinking water systems leads to the formation of carcinogenic chlorine organic compounds such as trihalomethane and haloacetic acids. Therefore, ozone is now used in many countries for disinfection and for the removal of organic substances in drinking water treatment. In this case, the formation of halogenated organic compounds can only become a problem if bromide is present in the water before treatment. Furthermore, the oxidation products of ozone are more biodegradable and can be removed with biologically activated filters, whilst organic chlorine compounds are not biodegradable. Another advantage of ozone is that specific microbial pathogens – such as cryptosporidium – that are highly resistant to traditional disinfection procedures can also be removed with ozone.
