Insufficient hygienic conditions frequently cause epidemics in animal breeding facilities. This may lead to complete livestock losses, apart from the danger that further new types of viruses may be created through mutation. The SARS epidemic in 2003 was one of the most striking examples pointing this out. Thousands of people lost their lives due to exposure to the SARS virus. One of the presumable sources of the epidemic can be found in unhygienic chicken breeding.

We should learn from such experiences to revive the hygiene conditions in livestock breeding and thus prevent any further life threat situations for humans and for animals as well. The strongest weapon against diseases and epidemics we have in our hands is to maximize hygiene measures.

Conventional methods of cleaning and sterilization are based on chemical treatments which are by themselves a major threat against life. The use of chlorine in sanitation for example produces so-called persistent organics (POP) which cannot be removed from the environment by biological treatment.

Mother nature invites us to have a look at how she has been cleaning air, water and soil for millions of years. Natural phenomena - or "technologies" - are continuously cleaning the atmosphere. That enables humans and animals to breathe without contracting infections. Nature uses the ultraviolet radiation (UV) of the sun, the water vapours of the clouds and the force of the wind for thoroughly cleaning both atmosphere and earth itself. UV radiation and water are producing oxygen radicals and hydrogen radicals, both strong gaseous oxidizers. The wind is a blender, constantly stirring these gaseous oxidizers within the atmosphere to provide a shield against the evolution of germs.

FOOD PROCESSING

Food processors and beverages manufacturers consume billions of gallons of water day by day for food handling, washing, processing, cooking and cleaning. All of this water must be free of contaminants. The food and beverage industry has begun to recognize the potential of ozone as a disinfectant and as an alternative to chlorine, which has been used traditionally to treat food processing water. This is because ozone eliminates a problem associated with chlorine disinfection - the potential of toxic residues of chlorine and chlorinated by-products building up in water that has been treated more than once. Ozone is rapidly gaining acceptance as an alternative to chlorine for disinfection. In aqueous solutions, ozone can be used to disinfect equipment, process water, and some foodstuff. In gaseous form, ozone can act as a preservative for certain food products and can also sanitize food packaging material. Products currently being preserved with ozone include eggs during cold storage, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fresh fish.

AGRICULTURE

The earth's water reservoirs have been and are being polluted by a number of means. Industrialization made it harder to solve the problem. The biggest difficulty for agriculture is the diminishing availability of water without pollutants. A complete water analysis was performed, revealing the culprits: the source water had a pH of 7.8, its Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) was an extremely low -177 mV, furthermore, it contained 60 parts per million (ppm) of hydrogen sulfide. Based on the water analysis results, the grower and fertilizer supplier theorized that the hydrogen sulfide was blocking the fertilizer, prompting the excessive use of fertilizer and poor crop yields. It was also believed that lowly dissolved oxygen levels in the water contributed to limited plant growth and that blossom end rot was caused by high pH. Characterized by dime-sized brown spots, blossom end rot is the result of insufficient calcium in the flower end of the fruit. The grower believed that the bacteria feeding of the hydrogen sulfide was contributing to an extremely high organic load, which in turn was driving up the pH. The high pH condition was inhibiting the transfer of calcium from the water to the fruit.
